Itchy Scalp

There are few things in life that can be more aggravating, annoying and embarrassing than having a dry, itchy scalp. Many people who suffer with this problem also find they may have dry, flaky skin, painful sores and even hair loss. For many people who have a severely itchy scalp, there are actually underlying medical conditions that cause the discomfort. It is important to find the root cause of this issue so that it can be addressed either with a home remedy or by seeking medical treatment.

One of the things both men and women fear most is hair loss. Going bald is dreadful for both sexes and many have found that it begins when they first experience a dry, itchy scalp. If one works to find a cure to their issue, they may even be able to prevent or put off any excessive hair loss and the stress that comes with it. When trying to find a cure for any scalp problems, one should first look to the skin. If there are any obvious bumps or inflammation or if there are any signs of scalp acne, dandruff or even open sores, the skin is likely the problem. If there is nothing wrong with the skin, then it could be a more serious issue with the actual skull or even a neurological problem, so immediate medical attention from a doctor should be sought.  Many scalp and skin problems can be addressed easily with specific scalp treatments or shampoos. These treatments can restore the moisture to the skull and hair, leaving you with a healthier looking head of hair in addition to the itch-free scalp. Other, more serious cases may require a stronger treatment which could include some leave-in moisturizers, which don’t get rinsed out in a shower, so they can help treat your scalp all day long. For some people, it is better to use a more natural home remedy than relying on special shampoos or hair products.

One such home remedy involves the use of apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar has many healthy benefits associated with it and is known to lower cholesterol, prevent some cancers, help regulate blood pressure and yes, even help cure an itchy scalp. It is believed that this is because apple cider vinegar helps regulate some of the harmful bacteria which can build up in the body, causing blockage in the pores of the skin. It can also lead to an overall healthier life due to the other health benefits – and when your life is healthier, you are less likely to have high levels of stress which can cause problems. There are two ways to use apple cider vinegar to help treat a red, itchy scalp. The first way is to drink about one to two table spoons of it per day. It can be mixed with water or just taken straight. This will help regulate the pH levels of your body and provide several other health benefits as well. Taking it this way may take a few days or even weeks before it takes full effect, but since there are so many other health benefits associated with drinking this much apple cider vinegar, it’s a good idea to start now.

The second way is to soak your scalp in the apple cider vinegar. The acidic nature of the vinegar will help clean out your scalp and kill many of the potential harmful bacteria that may be in the pores of your scalp. It is important to note, however, that apple cider vinegar has a very strong and distinct smell. So make sure to rinse thoroughly and wash your hair several times before going out after doing this treatment.
Another cause of the itchy scalp can be dermatitis. Dermatitis is a skin condition which causes redness and excessive itching. It can also lead to flaky skin, sometimes caused or made worse by the scratching. Dermatitis can occur on any part of the body, but when it is on the scalp it can be particularly annoying due to the hair being in the way and the embarrassment of constantly having to scratch your head. Dermatitis can be cured through the use of medical treatments, such as prescription creams or ointments. Depending on the cause and severity, some doctors or dermatologists may also prescribe an antibiotic to help cure the problem.   When suffering from an itchy scalp it is important to try to avoid aggressive scratching of the problem area. This can lead to hair loss, painful sores, redness and even bleeding. While the temptation to scratch may be great, it is better to gently rub the area if necessary. While attempting to find a permanent solution to the itching, it is alright to use an anti-itch cream or spray to help calm the area temporarily, but understand that this is not a long term fix to the root of the problem. The anti-itching ointment can help soothe the area, so you are not nearly as tempted to scratch. This will help prevent the problem from growing worse and leading to the more severe symptoms, such as permanent hair loss.

If you find that you are having an extremely itchy scalp for more than two weeks, it is advisable to make an appointment with a dermatologist so they can make a professional assessment of your scalp’s situation and help get to the core of the problem. Depending on what they say, you may need to make a return visit for treatments or just follow their instructions for over the counter, or at home remedies for your itchy scalp.

An itchy scalp is no small concern to anyone suffering from it. The pain and itching is enough to drive anyone crazy, but with some great at-home cures and help from a doctor, if needed, it is possible to overcome this debilitating condition.
